11 Foods in your Kitchen for Homemade Food Facial Masks

This post is a bit different to the usual. It still is about food, but not for eating. Whaaaaat?! Calm down, I’ll share more edible foods soon I promise, but for now I want to get you thinking about how you can use the foods in your kitchen for homemade food facial masks!

My “beauty regime” is pretty basic and simple. I try to keep chemicals off my skin as much as possible, so I don’t really use too many skincare products. I use organic coconut oil for a lot of things like taking off make-up, moisturising the body and just about everything else. I love jojoba or rosehip oil for my face.

So smearing food on my face seems like a natural progression. There are a lot of food facial recipes and ideas floating around the internet already, and really, you can experiment once you know which foods are best for it. I’ve shared two of my favourite recipes that I’ve been using a lot lately, but also my top 11 foods in your kitchen that you can use to make your own homemade food facial mask.

  1. Oats – soothing for the skin, but also can be used as an exfoliant. They will absorb and remove excess oil and bacteria from your skin and exfoliate dead skin cells, thus helping to combat acne. Oats contain polisaccharides, which become gelatinous in water and are good for fighting dry, flaky skin. They are anti-inflammatory, so you can put 2 cups into a cloth and tie it up and pop it in the bath for a soothing soak.
  2. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) – this is great as a toner or using in facial masks. A little goes a long way (1 tbsp is generally plenty) and don’t get it in your eyes of course. Expect fresher skin and tightened pores. Get it here.
  3. Organic or Manuka honey – manuka honey especially is ah-maaazing for your skin. It’s anti-microbial and kills the bad bacteria, so I love adding it to my face masks.  Or just smearing it straight onto the skin and leaving for 10 minutes works wonders too.
  4. Hydrolysed collagen – Collagen is sooooo essential for the health of your skin! It’s what gives your skin all its elasticity and strength. Eating it is very nourishing for your joints, digestion and skin health, but you can also apply it like a mask too. Just mix 1 tablespoon of hydrolysed collagen powder with 2 tablespoons or warm water and apply to face. Leave on for 15 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water. Get it here.
  5. Ground coffee – This one is my favourite to use in the morning, because just that gorgeous aroma wakes me up and leaves me feeling refreshed! Coffee reduces inflammation and redness, and the appearance of under eye circles. Plus, because it exfoliates too you are removing dead skin — wake up your tired complexion.
  6. Coconut oil – Pretty much the best moisturiser ever! A little goes a long way and you can use it to remove make up as well. Just smear a little onto a cotton wool pad and wipe gently. Get it here.
  7. Avocado – Avos contains a variety of minerals such as iron, potassium, calcium, sodium, copper, magnesium and more, PLUS they have vitamins A, E, B and K! So you know that when you smear that avocado over your skin, you’re going to nourish it to the deepest layers of your epidermis and give back that elasticity to even the driest skin. Goes well with honey and lemon juice.
  8. Cucumber – Not just for sticking over your eyes to get rid of bags! Cooling, soothing and hydrating, cucumbers make a lovely refreshing ingredient for your skin. Pureeing it with honey and oats makes a gentle exfoliant and mask.
  9. Cinnamon – Great for blemishes and giving back life to your complexion. But be warned, a little goes a long way — I wouldn’t use any more than 1/4 tsp at a time and increase if you find that ok. Some people may find it too much, if it’s tingling, I would suggest it’s not the mask for you.
  10. Banana – great for a face mask that moisturises your skin and leaves it feeling softer. Mash up a ripe banana into a smooth paste, then gently apply it to your face and neck. Let it set for 10-20 minutes, then rinse it off with cold water.
  11. Your Juice Plus capsules – Just open up your capsules, sprinkle the powder into your hand and mix with a little water or even coconut oil. Rub gently onto your skin and leave for a few minutes before rinsing off well. I do this about once a week by itself or as part of a mask, it feels SO good after. Glowing and nourished skin! Berry Oat & Collagen Facial

The ingredients
  • 2 tbsp quick oats
  • 1 tbsp ACV
  • 1 tbsp hydrolysed collagen
  • 1 tbsp organic honey
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 Juice Plus whole food Berry capsules
How to make it
  1. Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl or jar, allow the oats to soften for about 10 minutes.
  2. You can leave it as it for an exfoliant OR pop into a food processor and blend smooth.
  3. Smooth over face and leave on for 10 minutes.
  4. Rinse off and pat skin dry with a clean towel.

Coffee & Coconut Facial

The ingredients
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp ground organic coffee
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
How to make it
  1. Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl or jar.
  2. Gently smooth over face in a circular motion to exfoliate. Don't scrub too hard!
  3. Leave on for 5 minutes.
  4. Easiest to rinse off in the shower, and you can wash the remaining coconut oil off with a gentle soap like Dr.Bronner's.
